Leaving the natural gum on the thread is what gives Chanderi its glassy translucence and cool, papery shine - and what makes it maddeningly delicate to weave. Motifs are not printed on but woven in by hand with a separate needle for each butis, gold zari worked into a ground so sheer you can see light through it.
