Design Details

An indigo Ajrakh kurta and dupatta in modal cotton silk, block printed in the traditional Kutch palette of deep blue, madder red and cream. Geometric and floral motifs cover the body, framed by a bold bordered panel at the hem, and the dupatta repeats the print with red tassels along the edge. Modal silk gives Ajrakh an unusual fluidity and a soft lustre, so the drape is closer to silk than cotton. A considered, craft-led choice for daywear and informal gatherings.

My Story

Ajrakh is one of the oldest surviving block-printing traditions in the world, practised by the Khatri community in Kutch for close to four centuries, and its indigo-and-madder cloth has been pulled from Indus Valley excavations older still. A single piece passes through as many as sixteen stages of washing, resist-printing, mordanting and dyeing, laid out in the sun and returned to the river again and again, so a length of Ajrakh can take weeks to complete. The geometry is deliberate - stars, trefoils and lattices set in perfect symmetry - and the deep blue and madder red come from natural indigo and madder root, never a chemical shortcut.

Wash and Care

Dry clean only for the first wash. After that, hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent, never wring the fabric, and dry flat in the shade. Press on a low heat with a cloth between the iron and any zari or embroidery.
