Design Details

An ivory lawn cotton kurta with a button-through placket, framed by gold-beige printed borders along the placket, sleeves and hem, and scattered with blue-grey Brahmakamal bootis. Bead work detailing picks out the neckline. The matching ivory dupatta carries the same gold border and floral motifs, and ivory trousers complete the set. The restrained ivory-and-blue palette is understated and quietly luxurious, and lawn cotton keeps it light against the skin.

My Story

Lawn cotton takes its name from Laon in northern France, where it was first woven as a fine linen for church vestments before cotton took its place. It is a plain-weave cloth made from very high-count combed yarn, then given a light finish that leaves it smooth and faintly crisp rather than soft - which is why it stays cool against the skin and holds a printed border crisply instead of letting it blur. In the subcontinent it became the fabric of the summer wardrobe, where the season is long and the heat is not negotiable.

Wash and Care

Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, separately for the first two or three washes as natural dyes may bleed a little. Do not bleach or wring. Dry in the shade to keep the colour true, and press on a medium heat while slightly damp.
