Design Details
A pale yellow mulmul kurta covered in dense chikankari, the white threadwork spreading across the body, sleeves and hem in floral and jaali stitches, with a round neck opening into a keyhole slit and three-quarter sleeves. Chikankari on mulmul is the traditional pairing: the fabric is fine enough to carry the shadow work and jaali that define the craft, and light enough for the warmest weather. It comes with a mulmul bottom and a pure chiffon dupatta - a graceful choice for summer occasions.

My Story
Chikankari is Lucknow’s white-on-white whisper of a craft, said to have arrived with Nur Jahan, the Mughal empress who fell in love with fine Persian shadow work and had it made in her own court. More than thirty distinct stitches make up its vocabulary - bakhiya worked from the reverse so the pattern floats up as a shadow, murri and phanda knotted into tiny grains of rice and millet, jaali teased open with a needle to make lace without ever cutting the cloth. One kurta can pass through six pairs of hands, each artisan a specialist in a few stitches alone, and take weeks to finish.
Wash and Care
This set mixes fabrics, so treat the pieces differently. The dupatta should be dry cleaned for the first wash, then hand washed in cold water and dried flat in the shade. The kurta and bottom can be washed in cold water with a mild detergent from the start. Do not bleach or wring. Press on a low heat with a cloth between the iron and any zari or embroidery.
