Design Details

A beige kora cotton kurta laid out in panels of olive-green block print, with floral bootis across the body, a chevron-detailed centre placket and printed borders framing the hem. Bead work picks out the neckline and mirror work is scattered through the kurta and dupatta, catching light as you move. The contrast ivory dupatta carries a green printed border and zigzag edge, and olive trousers ground the set. Earthy, handcrafted and easy to wear through the day.

My Story

Mirror work - abhla bharat - travelled into Kutch and Rajasthan from Persia in the seventeenth century, when the discs were cut from mica and, later, from hand-blown glass spun into a dome and shattered into pieces. Because no two shards are the same, each mirror is caught in place by a ring of buttonhole stitches worked to fit it exactly, a small feat of hand-eye judgement repeated hundreds of times over one garment. It was never only decoration: in desert communities the mirrors were believed to turn away the evil eye by throwing a person’s own gaze back at them.

Wash and Care

Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, separately for the first two or three washes as natural dyes may bleed a little. Do not bleach or wring. Dry in the shade to keep the colour true, and press on a medium heat while slightly damp.
