Design Details

A deep emerald Maheshwari silk set, the kurta kept plain so the handloom sheen of the fabric does the work, paired with a contrast dupatta printed in a multicoloured kalamkari-style design and edged in a broad gold zari border with tassels. Matching green trousers complete it. Maheshwari silk is light for a silk and drapes softly, so this carries the richness of festive dressing without the weight, and sits naturally with temple gold or kundan.

My Story

Maheshwari weaving was founded in the 1760s by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar, who summoned weavers to her fort town on the banks of the Narmada and asked them to create a fabric worthy of gifts for visiting royalty. The patterns they drew came from the fort itself - the temple spires, the leaf and diamond carvings on its walls, the wave of the river below - and the reversible borders they perfected mean the cloth reads beautifully from either side. Woven from a silk warp and cotton weft, it carries the sheen of silk at a fraction of its weight, which is precisely why it drapes the way it does.

Wash and Care

Dry clean only for the first wash. After that, hand wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent, never wring the fabric, and dry flat in the shade. Press on a low heat with a cloth between the iron and any zari or embroidery.
