Design Details

A rust kora cotton kurta carrying dense Phulkari embroidery across the yoke, worked in coral, mustard, teal and green floral threadwork, with small embroidered bootis scattered down the body. The matching rust dupatta repeats the embroidered border and bootis, and rust trousers complete the set. Phulkari is a Punjabi hand-embroidery tradition built on long floss-silk darning stitches, and the multicoloured work against a warm terracotta ground makes this a striking festive choice.

My Story

Phulkari means ‘flower work’, and in Punjab it was never something you bought - it was something a grandmother began stitching when a girl was born, so that a finished odhni waited for her wedding day. The craft is worked from the back of the cloth in long darning stitches of untwisted floss silk, laid so densely that the surface turns almost entirely to thread. Every motif carries meaning: wheat sheaves for a good harvest, birds and figures for the life the bride was about to begin. It survived Partition in the trunks families carried with them, and it is stitched by hand to this day.

Wash and Care

Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, separately for the first two or three washes as natural dyes may bleed a little. Do not bleach or wring. Dry in the shade to keep the colour true, and press on a medium heat while slightly damp.
